ABOUT OUR HISTORY

How We

WERE FORMED

In 1928, Bethelham Steel originally owned the fire truck that would go on to become the first engine in service of the Reedsville Volunteer Fire Department. This historic engine, generously donated to the community, played a pivotal role in the formation of the Reedsville Fire Department in 1936, marking the beginning of a legacy of dedicated service and community protection. The generous donation of the fire truck by Bethelham Steel not only provided essential equipment for the newly established fire department but also fostered a spirit of unity and cooperation within the community, solidifying the foundation for the department's future endeavors in safeguarding the lives and property of Reedsville residents.

The 1980

REEDSVILLE TORNADO

The most devastating tornado to strike WV since 1944. There were no deaths but 15 were injured. Intial touchdown was near Ridgedale in eastern Monongalia County. The tornado moved southeast hitting Reedsville in Preston County, to Manown, to southern Kingwood, passing 2 1/2 miles south of Terra Alta. The total path length was 29 miles, 24 of which was in WV. Total damage was set at $4 Million. 28 homes were totally destroyed, 42 homes had major damage, 60 homes had minor damage. 13 businesses and 9 public buildings were damaged. Of the public buildings that were damaged, The Reedville fire hall had its roofing completely tore off and its new fire hall that was under construction suffered damage to the side of the building and its doors were sucked out by the force of the tornado.

Our Home

Fairfax Hall

Mr. William Dent Fairfax generously donated 2 acres of land for the construction of the new fire hall, which eventually became the namesake of the new facility, Fairfax Hall. This act of kindness and support has been a cornerstone of the Reedsville Volunteer Fire Department, a dedicated group of volunteers who have been serving the community with fire and rescue services since 1936. The legacy of Mr. Fairfax's donation continues to be a vital part of the department's history and commitment to the community.
